  • Buy the combined ticket (€10.50 in 2026, verify at ravennamosaici.it) that covers the five main UNESCO sites: San Vitale, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Neonian Baptistery and the Archbishop's Chapel. The Arian Baptistery and Sant'Apollinare in Classe require separate tickets.
  • Allow at least 2 full days for the eight UNESCO mosaic sites. One day cannot do justice to Ravenna — the mosaic programmes need time and a good guidebook or audio guide to be understood.
  • Mausoleum of Galla Placidia (the supreme 5th-century mosaic interior) has a strict 5-minute time limit per group because of the moisture sensitivity of the mosaics. Time your entry for early morning when the natural light is best.
  • Sant'Apollinare in Classe (5 km south of the city centre) is reached by the local bus #4 or a 20-minute taxi ride. The 5th-century apse mosaic of the Transfiguration is the masterpiece. Do not skip this site despite the distance.
  • Ravenna is the easiest Italian Christian pilgrimage destination to combine with Venice (130 km, 2 hours by train) or Bologna (75 km, 1 hour by train). Many pilgrim groups do a Ravenna day trip from Bologna.
  • Dante Alighieri died and is buried at Ravenna (1321). His tomb at the Basilica di San Francesco is a free pilgrimage stop for Italian and Christian literary visitors. The 700th anniversary in 2021 saw extensive restoration.

¿Sabías que?

ℹ️ ¿Sabías que?

  • Ravenna was the imperial capital of the Western Roman Empire from 402 to 476 AD (its last 70 years), then the Ostrogothic capital under Theodoric (493-526), then the Byzantine Exarchate capital (540-751) — three successive imperial capitals in 350 years. The mosaic programmes reflect each layer.
  • The Justinian and Theodora panels in San Vitale (c. 547 AD) are the only surviving portrait mosaics of the emperor and empress made during their lifetimes — and the supreme political-religious icon of Byzantine imperial Christianity.
  • The 'Magi procession' in Sant'Apollinare Nuovo is the earliest surviving Christian image of the Magi as we know them (named Caspar, Melchior, Balthazar — though those names came later). The procession was added in the 6th century after the building's original Arian decoration was orthodoxised.
  • The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia (built 425-430 AD for the daughter of Theodosius the Great) houses no body — Galla Placidia herself is probably buried in Rome. The empty mausoleum nevertheless contains what are widely regarded as the supreme surviving Early Christian mosaics anywhere.
  • Charlemagne visited Ravenna in 787 and was so impressed by Theodoric's San Vitale that he had the architecture replicated for his Palatine Chapel at Aachen (798-805) — making Ravenna the direct architectural ancestor of the entire Carolingian and Ottonian church-building tradition.

Theodoric the Goth: Barbarian Champion of Civilisation (Thomas Hodgkin)Older but accessible biography of the Arian king whose Ravenna palace and mosaics survive. Helpful for understanding the Arian Baptistery's iconographic programme.
