Holy Family Route
Vatican-endorsed pilgrimage path of the Flight into Egypt
Why this destination matters
The Holy Family Route is the Vatican-endorsed pilgrimage path of the Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15) - 25 officially recognised sites across Sinai, the Nile Delta, Cairo and Middle Egypt. According to Coptic tradition (preserved in a vision of Pope Theophilus around 385-412 AD), the Holy Family stayed in Egypt for approximately three years and six months before returning to Nazareth.
The Route was formally launched by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism in May 2022 and inscribed on UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in the same year. Pope Francis endorsed the pilgrimage; holyfamilyegypt.com is the official portal.
Highlights include the Wadi El Natrun monasteries (Saint Macarius, Saint Bishoy, the Syrians, Baramous - 4th-century Coptic monasticism centres); Matariya (Virgin's Tree sycamore); Maadi Church of the Virgin (the floating Bible miracle of 12 March 1976 - the Bible opened on its own to Isaiah 19:25 'Blessed be Egypt my people'); Gabal el-Tair ('Mountain of Birds', divine handprint discovered 1984); and Al-Muharraq Monastery (southernmost stop, where the Holy Family is said to have stayed six months and ten days; the altar stone is venerated as Christ's bed).
Key sites to visit
Wadi El Natrun monasteries
Saint Macarius, Saint Bishoy, the Syrians (Deir al-Suryan), Baramous - the four great 4th-century Coptic monasteries.
Matariya (Virgin's Tree)
Ancient sycamore tree where, by tradition, Mary rested with the infant Jesus. The current tree is a young replanting; the older trunk stands beside it.
Maadi Church of the Virgin
Site of the floating Bible miracle of 12 March 1976 - the Bible opened on its own to Isaiah 19:25. On the Nile bank in the Cairo suburb of Maadi.
Gabal el-Tair
'Mountain of Birds' - cave shrine where a divine handprint was discovered on the wall in 1984. Above the Nile in Minya governorate.
Al-Muharraq Monastery
Southernmost recognised stop, near Asyut. The Holy Family is said to have stayed six months and ten days. The altar stone is venerated as the bed of the Christ Child.
Coptic Cairo (Hanging Church, Abu Serga)
Multiple recognised Holy Family stops in the Cairo Coptic Quarter.
Bilbeis, Mostorod, Sakha, Samannoud, Sanblad, Tell Basta
Nile Delta stops with local Coptic shrines.
Best time to visit
October-April. Avoid the upper-Egypt summer heat. 1 June for the official feast of the Entry of the Holy Family into Egypt.
Key feast days
- 1 June - Entry of the Holy Family into Egypt (official Coptic feast)
- Variable - Holy Family Trail processions through October-May
How to get there
Cairo (CAI) airport is the main hub. The Route requires a multi-day organised tour with private driver - distances between stops are substantial and police escorts are often required in Asyut and Minya governorates.
Where to stay
Cairo hotels for the Nile Delta and Wadi El Natrun stops. Beni Suef, Minya and Asyut for upper-Egypt stops. Most pilgrim itineraries take 8-14 days.
Tours and experiences
8-14 day organised Coptic tours combine the Holy Family Route with Coptic Cairo and (where security permits) Saint Catherine's. Smaller bespoke itineraries focus on the Cairo, Wadi El Natrun and Asyut hotspots.

Pilgrim tips
đĄ Practical advice for pilgrims
- The Holy Family Route is the Coptic tradition of the 25 sites associated with the Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15) â places where, according to Coptic tradition, the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child stayed during their 3-4 year refuge from Herod's massacre. The Vatican officially endorsed the route in 2017.
- The 25 sites stretch from the Sinai entry point through the Nile Delta and as far south as Al-Muharraq (450 km from Cairo). The full route takes 7-10 days; the highlights cluster in three concentrations: Cairo area (Matariya, Maadi, Coptic Quarter), Delta (Sakha, Samannoud, Burullus) and Upper Egypt (Asyut, Al-Muharraq).
- Police escorts are sometimes required in Asyut and Minya governorates (southern Egypt) â your Egyptian tour operator will arrange these. Independent travel beyond Cairo is more complex than the standard pilgrim itinerary; most pilgrims use a Coptic-Christian-owned operator.
- The principal Holy Family liturgical occasion is 1 June (Feast of the Flight into Egypt in the Coptic calendar) â the principal feast at the Holy Family Route sites. Cairo's Mar Girgis area is alive with processions.
- Maadi (now a Cairo suburb) is the traditional point where the Holy Family boarded a sailing boat to head south. The Virgin Mary Church at Maadi has a 19th-century discovery â a Bible floated against the current as a sign â preserved in the church.
- Wadi El Natrun (110 km northwest of Cairo) has four active Coptic monasteries (Saint Macarius, Saint Bishoy, Paromeos, Syrian) â among the oldest continuously functioning monasteries in Christianity. Tour buses can visit Saint Bishoy and Saint Macarius in a day from Cairo.
- The Al-Muharraq Monastery in Asyut governorate (Upper Egypt) is the 'second Bethlehem' of Coptic tradition â the Holy Family is said to have stayed here 6 months and 10 days. The 1st-century altar stone (the 'first Christian altar in Egypt') is preserved in the principal church.

âšī¸ Fascinating facts
- The Coptic tradition of the Holy Family Route was first compiled by Pope Theophilus of Alexandria around 400 AD, based on dreams and visions received by him during the night of the Coptic Christmas (29 Khoiakh / 25 December). The 25-site framework is approximately 1,600 years old.
- The Egyptian government formally endorsed the Holy Family Route as a tourism initiative in 2017, the same year the Vatican gave its endorsement. The Coptic Pope Tawadros II and the Latin Pope Francis both attended joint celebrations of the route's launch.
- Matthew's Gospel (2:13-15) is the only New Testament source for the Flight into Egypt. Coptic tradition fills in the 3-4 year sojourn with detailed itinerary â but the 25 sites are based on local tradition rather than direct biblical evidence. The Hosea 11:1 fulfilment ('out of Egypt have I called my son') is the principal scriptural anchor.
- The Coptic Synaxarium (calendar of saints) records the Holy Family's arrival in each of the 25 sites with specific dates. The 1 June feast is the entrance into Egypt; the 7 Baounah (10 days after the Coptic Pentecost) is the departure. The Coptic liturgical year actually encodes the entire journey.
- Several Holy Family sites have miraculous wells associated with them â Matariya's Virgin Mary's Tree (the sycamore where the Holy Family rested) and the well that sprang up when the Child Jesus stepped on the ground are still visited today. The well water is collected by Coptic pilgrims as a blessing.
